How to fit in an Arlanda Airport layover run - Sigtuna, Sweden
If you are visiting Stockholm, Sweden, chances are you will come through the main airport, Arlanda located in the Sigtuna Municipality. The Arlanda Airport is only 20 minutes from Stockholm if you take the Arlanda Express, so it’s also likely that you don’t stay at the airport. However, if you’ve got an early morning flight, it can be convenient to stay at the Radisson Blu located right at the airport.
Since the airport is located outside of Stockholm, there are trails accessible right from the terminal. In particular, a run around the lake in the northeast corner of the airport is about 5-6 miles (10km). There are also paved paths that go for a long distance enabling you to get in a run of just about any length. On this day, I started out with a run around the lake where I enjoyed some trails to start, then did an out and back on the paths along the road. In both directions you run right along the flight path so you can get some really nice photos of airplanes coming in to land.
Sweden itself is home to many great ultrarunning destinations, such as the ones I experienced on my runs at the Kolarbyn Eco Lodge and in the north near Kiruna, Sweden. But, if you just have time for a layover, then I encourage you to step outside the terminal and have yourself a quick run before your flight at the Arlanda Airport.
