Most Unusual Thing in the World : Trail Running Edition
When it comes to unusual places to explore by trail running, the Nebraska National Forest might not be the first thing that comes to mind. However, this hidden gem in central Nebraska is truly one of the most unusual things on earth. I recently visited this incredible destination to run its trails and was blown away by its natural beauty, fascinating history, and one-of-a-kind experiences.

My journey began in Omaha, Nebraska by heading west on Highway 92. The landscape along Nebraska Highway 92 was a far cry from only the farmlands I had expected. As I traveled farther west, the farmland gave way to rolling hills and grasslands.
My destination was the Nebraska National Forest, Bessey Ranger District, about an hour’s drive from Broken Bow, Nebraska. The Nebraska Sand Hills, where the forest is located, are untouched by human hands and have remained this way because of the land being unsuitable for farming. However, thanks to Charles Bessey, who planted the largest hand-planted forest in the US a century ago, this unique landscape is now home to one of the largest man-made forests in the world.
I began my exploration of the forest by climbing the fire tower, which offered stunning views of the surrounding area. From the top of the tower, I could see the miles of forested wilderness that stretched out before me, but that the trees abruptly ended where the planting stopped. I had planned a route that would take me through the heart of the forest, allowing me to get up close and personal with this unusual landscape. The trail winds through dense forests, across open fields, and past streams and ponds. While I didn’t see any, the descriptions I’ve read of the area say that there are elk, deer, and even coyotes.
One of the unique aspects of the Nebraska National Forest is its history. This area was once home to Native American tribes, and evidence of their presence can still be found in the form of arrowheads and other artifacts. The forest also played an important role in World War II, when it was used as a training ground for the 10th Mountain Division, who would fight in the Italian Alps in World War II.
In conclusion, the Nebraska National Forest is one of the most unusual places on earth, not just for a trail run but also to visit. It offers a unique blend of natural beauty, fascinating history, and one-of-a-kind experiences. Whether you’re a nature lover, history buff, or just looking for a new adventure, the Nebraska National Forest is definitely worth a visit.
